Sagres and West Coast

Sagres

Sagres is a small town situated near to the Cape of St Vincent, the most south westerly point of Europe.

Here you can eat the freshest fish and breath the purest air, probably in the whole Algarve, witness amazing sunsets and feel the impressive weight of Portuguese history.

Sagres most obvious legacy to present day is the Henry the Navigator Fortress located on the imposing headland of Ponta de Sagres.

The hulking walls of the fort only remain on one side with the impressive enterance arch the only access. Beyond the walls, things are moderately less impressive with a small restored chapeland the Rosa dos Ventos, a pebble wind compass measuring 43 metres across.

Although Sagres is on the Algarve it doesn't have the same over-developed holiday town feel of some of those towns further East. Situated within a few Kms of Europe's most south western point, Cape St. Vincent, the town has a rather windswept, remote feel about it.

It comprises of a lively, working harbour, a number of unpretentious bars and restaurants, small supermarkets and perhaps most importantly to many of its visitors fine beaches, popular with both sunbathers and surfers.

In fact the shape of the coast here means you can find a sheltered beach, and excellent surfing waves most of the year.

West Coast: Running from the Cape all the way up to Sines, the West Coast has some of the cleanest, wildest and most picturesque coastal landscape in Europe. The Atlantic creates a freshness in the air lacking in the Meditteranean and the people of the region are incredibly friendly and hospitable making this surfers paradise a great place to discover.

The nearest town is Vila do Bispo that acts as the administrative centre for the area and also houses a few good fish restaurants.

The history, location and surrounding features make Sagres and the West Coast well worth a visit.
