Monte Gordo, Vila Real de Santo António
Monte Gordo is a small village only 5Km from Spain, and 52Km from the Algarve's international airport of Faro.
Monte Gordo Bay boasts the largest beach and warmest waters in the Algarve, temperatures are generally higher here than further west, thanks largely to its Mediterranean climate and favoured geographical location near the mouth of the River Guardiana.
The town has developed considerably as a holiday destination in recent years, catering for Portuguese and foreign visitors alike and is perfect for Algarve family beach holidays.
There is a variety of accommodation in Monte Gordo from apartments to hotels. Most of the apartments are self-catering with most of the hotels being half-board or all-inclusive and 4-5-stars hotels.
Going inland from Monte Gordo you see Castro Marim, famous for its two mammoth castles high up on hills.The original castle to the north of Castro Marim was built in 1319 and served as headquarters for the crusading Order of the Knights of Christ.
Other historic attractions within the town include Alcoutim's Roman remains, and there are ancient copper mines up here. Evidence of human presence dating back to the Neolithic and Chalcolithic period - that's around 4000BC, have been found in the Alcoutim area of Portugal.
With Spain in sight across the bay many visitors choose to make a visit to the nearby town of Vila Real de Santo Antonio from where there is a ferry across to the Spanish town of Ayamonte.
Monte Gordo, itself, has very little to do during the day other than relax along the beach or by the pool but one can still hire a bike and enjoy a cycle ride, take a boat trip on the Guadiana river or a jeep safari to the Nature Reserve, try some watersports or have a round of golf at one of the nearby golf courses.
