Alvor, Portimão
Believed to be founded by Carthaginians, Alvor village is now a very popular holiday location in the Algarve enclosed by narrow streets that have kept development to a minimum.
This delightful old fishing village with whitewashed houses, streets running down to the natural lagoon opening onto the sea has recently grown into a tourist centre. However it is one of the places in the Algarve where you can still watch the fishermen bring in their daily catch at the old quay.
Alvor is located some 7 kilometres Southwest of the commercial town of Portimão on the southern coast of the Algarve. Praia da Rocha and Praia da Vau are a short bus ride or taxi away.
Less crowded than some of its neighbour places, there has been a fair amount of development here, from cheap apartments to luxury hotels, making the area an eclectic mix of old and new, Alvor gives you the opportunity to enjoy the charm of old Algarve along with fine beaches, good shopping, bars and restaurants and fabulous sunsets.
Highly recommended are the restaurants on the riverside square that serve excellent grilled fish and local culinary specialities.
