Originally a fortified Roman town, and for centuries a typical algarvian fishing village, Albufeira, located in the centre of the Algarve, has a good mix of things to do, beaches, golf courses, a wide variety of restaurants and bars and offers all types of accommodation, from self-catering aparthotels to luxury hotels.

Only 40 minutes away from Faro International Airport, Albufeira, until the 1970s, was a quiet fishing village like most of the Algarve but has since become one the most popular holiday destination in the south of Portugal since the late 70s.

This picturesque location is now a thriving tourist town offering activity and diversion day and night, and surrounded by a host of beautiful beaches.

The old town, with its narrow and well maintained streets, is centered around the main square with which is a short walk from the beach and has numerous restaurants serving a wide variety of food.

The modern centre which is circa 2km to the East at Montechoro. Here you can find lots of pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants along what has been nicknamed the strip.

Praia da Galé and São Rafael resorts are a few kilometres along the coast and offer a more secluded experience whilst still providing the necessary facilities and some stunning beach rock cliffs formations.

For the visiting golfer, three golf courses stand out. Salgados is well-known and offers a challenge to even the most practised with its lakes and seaside terrain. Beginners fare well on the 9 holes at Balaia and The Sheraton Hotel, situated in a breathtaking cliff top location to the east of town, has its own 9-hole course, Pine Cliffs, built as its name suggests in pine woods.

Cultural sights in the town include the Manueline doorway of the Church of São Sebastião, the archway in the Travessa da Igreja Velha, evidence of the Moorish presence and the Clock Tower, considered a local treasure with its filigree iron bell support. Another tower of note is the 19th century bell tower of the Matriz Church.

The liveliest nightlife in the Algarve, sunshine, beaches, golf and lots of animation are just some of the guaranteed features of Albufeira.
